Katarina Witt first began to skate as early as age 5 years. It was not long before her abilities became apparent and at the age of Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered the school that was specifically made for kids with athletic abilities. It was here that she met her coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured the attention of everyone, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the sport. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female gold medal in figure skating following an extremely close contest. The following year she took home an even tighter contest. Actually, she was not a winner in the free-skating contest, but won gold based on performances during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the first woman after Sonja Haenie to be an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in the world of film and television as an actress before returning to figure skating to compete at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she enchanted fans despite the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
